The Path Ahead for Maritime IT
As we get 2020 “behind us” and move into 2021, challenges and obstacles still abound for nearly everyone. The same is true for those in the maritime industry. Many companies did not address concerns last year as planned because of the impact of the coronavirus. As a result, this year will require more attention to these matters. According to those surveyed, cyber threats, environmental compliance and cost optimization are among some of the bigger issues.
So what are maritime companies doing in response? Many are using technology to address these issues. As ship navigation, communication and other functions increasingly rely on technology, the criticality of strong cyber security protocols, practices and equipment rises. More and more companies are making substantial investments to protect their assets. Automation, IoT, AI and other technology utilizations are being employed to address both environmental compliance and cost reduction. For instance, real-time monitoring of vessels allows for performance and financial optimization, predictive maintenance and fleet management, among others. Vessel operators use data and technology to improve vessel routing, fuel consumption, and to navigate around bad weather.
With so many maritime undertakings occurring in the same time frame, a natural consequence will be competition for technical talent as companies bring in consultants or employees in response to the new initiatives and the additional workload. This increased competition will result in scarcity of resources and wage increases as candidates will have more options from which to choose.
In our March 9 webinar, we’ll discuss these and other expected trends in 2021.
